Olympic swimmers returning from Rio receive warm welcome at shore

TORONTO (The News Desk) — Emerging from the wind-swept waters of Lake Ontario exhausted from their long journey, members of Canada’s Olympic swimming team were greeted on shore today by friends, family, media and well-wishers.

“To be standing here with four medals is an amazing feeling,” a still sopping-wet Gold medalist Penny Oleksiak panted after pulling her luggage ashore. “I am elated. It makes everything we’ve gone through up to this point worth it.”

Swimmers returning to Canada’s West Coast were greeted by a similar sight on the sandy banks of Vancouver’s Jericho Beach on Tuesday morning.

“It’s amazing to think that four years ago, I was one of these people welcoming the Canadian swimming team back ashore from London,” said Kelowna native Taylor Ruck. “And now here I am bringing an Olympic medal back home. It’s surreal.” ♦
