TORONTO (The News Desk) — The bat thrown by José Bautista during Game 5 of the Toronto Blue Jays’ series against the Texas Rangers finally landed on the grass of the Rogers Centre on Friday evening.
Stadium staff reported seeing the bat fall back down from lower-earth orbit at around 11:57 p.m. EST, moments before the Blue Jays were eliminated from the playoffs during an away game against the Kansas City Royals.
“We believe it killed two birds, one each on the way up and down,” said Rogers Centre groundskeeper Trevor Grieves.
“José is an exceptional human, so this doesn’t surprise me one bit,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons told reporters.
Bautista was reserved when asked about the bat, however.
“No. No more questions about the goddamned bat flip,” he said before flipping over the press conference room table. ♦
